Flame Hawkfish

Flame Hawkfish

Snapshot: Their bright red-orange scales remind us of underwater bonfires. A sleek black stripe down their backs intensifies their fiery brilliance.

Other tidbits: Can grow up to 9cm or so. Range extends from the Great Barrier Reef, off Australia's eastern coast and throughout the Pacific region. They don't have a swim bladder so they resort to "walking" from rock to rock along the aquarium (and ocean) floor.

Bare bones must know: Live-rock fish-only system, fish-only system, or reef aquarium with care. If kept in fish-only systems, it can be prone to losing its colour.

  • Aquarium set-up: Have an abundance of live rock for structure and concealment, and corals to allow them to thrive in their underwater domain. Maintain an aquatic utopia by nailing the basics: rock-solid water quality with top-notch filtration and routine partial water changes.

Feeding: Hawkfish are chow hounds, readily devouring dried or frozen fare. Think frozen mysis shrimp, enriched brine shrimp, and hearty crustacean chunks (like live feeder shrimp) to keep these carnivores satisfied.

AQT note: All our fish feast on a diet of seaweed, marine pellets, flakes and frozen treats under our care. Keep the feast going in your tank!
